A few days into the trip and still none the wiser on the pronunciation of the place we are in. Arriving during the early hours of Monday morning we are greeted with the block-colour postcard image and Dutch influenced architecture. Our dock is plusher than ever, numerous boats of fishermen’s eyes burning through our skorts and a few sleeping men dotted on mattreses or conveniently hung in hammocks beneath work trucks.
Walking the first few steps onto Mambo beach, I felt like my eyes had been given their first gift of sight. It was paradise, the cerulean ocean was like nothing I had seen before. Crossing a lavish pool and bar; our feet reach the hot, white sand. We locate a beach front cabana, well the others do; I chuck my bags onto the floor and run straight into the water, surrendering to the divine ocean. It was all worth it now, all worth it.
Dean's enthusiasm to jump off the platform in the middle of the sea catches onto me and I swim spiritedly over to it. Only once aboard the sea stage, I get shaky and stand frozen at the top with everyone looking at me. The original idea was to do a dive bomb, but in the moment of hastiness I just run and jump, unsure of which form my body chooses to take.

I pass on the first beer but its only a matter of time before the Pina coladas come out, sparkling straw and all. There are no words for how much fun that day was; the perfect start to an unblemished vacation. As the sun sets, we all venture over to a large rock island where we play the game of 'penguining', sliding on your belly across the slippery algae covered surface alongside your opponent. Lauren and I strike a few yoga poses, saluting the sun, saluting Curacao and all that the week has in store for us.
